A targeted RITUAL for long-standing tension

Therapeutic Gua Sha is a 90-minute treatment designed to work deeply on tension, adhesions, and muscular stiffness.

Your therapist begins with therapeutic massage to warm up the tissues, soften the muscles, and prepare the area. Once the muscles are relaxed and more receptive, they use stainless steel Gua Sha tools to work more intensively on the targeted zones: firm, controlled strokes that address knots, congestion, and areas of deep restriction.

The intensity is always adapted to your tolerance. The treatment remains collaborative, with ongoing communication to stay in the “effective but manageable” range — never in excessive pain.

👉 Therapeutic Gua Sha at Aria is not a lymphatic drainage treatment. It is a muscular, therapeutic approach focused on tension and recovery. It is an excellent alternative to Deep Tissue Massage for very targeted work, without having to maintain constant deep pressure, and with similar results on muscle release.

Releases adhesions and deep muscular tension

By combining therapeutic massage with Gua Sha, this treatment helps loosen knots, adhesions, and long-standing areas of stiffness. It supports better muscle flexibility and a more fluid range of motion.

Supports mobility and recovery

Targeted work along specific muscle chains (neck, shoulders, back, hips, etc.) can help improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and support recovery after repeated efforts or physically demanding work.

Stimulates local blood flow

The stainless steel tools are used on tissues that have already been warmed and softened through massage. This helps promote local circulation, which may be felt as warmth, lightness, and a sense that the area can “breathe” more freely.

An alternative to Deep Tissue for intensive work

Therapeutic Gua Sha allows for very focused, intensive work on specific areas, without the therapist needing to maintain constant deep manual pressure as in a classic Deep Tissue Massage. For many clients, it is an excellent alternative to Deep Tissue, offering comparable results for muscular release while using a different technique and sensation.

Supports the nervous system

Even though it is targeted and intense, the treatment is carried out with a calm presence and structured rhythm. This allows the nervous system to gradually settle, helping the body to integrate the deeper work more effectively.

Contraindications and safety

This treatment is not recommended during pregnancy. During pregnancy, a specifically tailored Prenatal Massage is more appropriate.

It may also be inappropriate in some situations, such as: significant clotting disorders, use of anticoagulant medications, marked capillary fragility, active skin problems on the area to be treated, or fever/acute infection. Your therapist will always take time to review these aspects with you before beginning the session.

Therapeutic Gua Sha is ideal for people who are looking for deeper, more targeted muscular work, beyond what a relaxation or standard therapeutic massage offers.

It is especially recommended for:

  • Those dealing with recurrent tension in the neck, shoulders, back, or hips.

  • Clients who already appreciate Therapeutic or Deep Tissue Massage and want an even more focused approach on specific areas.

  • Physically active people, manual workers, and athletes who repeatedly stress certain regions of the body and want to support their recovery.

  • Individuals who feel that their tension always returns in the same places and want to explore a different way of addressing those “stubborn” zones.

Choosing the right treatment

Therapeutic Gua Sha and Deep Tissue Massage both aim to work in depth on long-standing tension, mobility, and recovery. The main difference lies in the method: one uses stainless steel tools, the other relies primarily on manual pressure.

In practice, the two approaches can often be considered interchangeable, depending on:

  • your personal preferences (sensation, intensity, curiosity about tool work),

  • the availability of therapists trained in each technique,

  • the specific areas you want to prioritize.

If you hesitate between the two, you can book either one and discuss it with your therapist at the beginning of your session. Together, you’ll choose the approach that best fits your body and your goals on that day — without any “wrong choice.” Whether you opt for Deep Tissue or Therapeutic Gua Sha, the work will remain therapeutic, targeted, and aligned with your objectives. 🌿

Therapeutic Gua Sha is performed on a massage table as part of a therapeutic massage session.

1. Initial consultation
Your therapist begins with a brief conversation to identify:

  • your priority areas (for example: neck/shoulders, upper back, hips),

  • your comfort level with pressure and intensity,

  • relevant history (injuries, surgeries, significant medical conditions).

2. Preparation with therapeutic massage
The session starts with therapeutic massage, which helps to:

  • warm up the tissues,

  • gradually relax the muscles,

  • assess the quality and depth of tension and how your body responds.

3. Gua Sha work with stainless steel tools
Once the area is ready, the therapist applies a small amount of product to allow smooth gliding, then uses stainless steel Gua Sha tools to:

  • scrape and smooth the surface of the skin,

  • follow specific muscle lines,

  • highlight and release areas of tension or stagnation.

The intensity is adjusted continuously based on your feedback.

4. Integration with massage
After the Gua Sha work, the therapist returns to therapeutic massage to integrate the treated area, calm the nervous system, and harmonize the rest of the body.

bEFORE AND AFTER YOUR SESSION

Hydrate well before and after the treatment to support tissue recovery and circulation. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours following the massage to allow your body time to fully integrate the treatment.

Good to know: redness and temporary marks
It is common to notice:

  • redness,

  • small dotted marks (petechiae),

  • a feeling similar to muscle soreness in the treated areas for 24–48 hours.

These reactions are normal with Gua Sha and usually fade on their own within a few days. Your therapist will give you simple aftercare advice (hydration, listening to your body, planning intense workouts accordingly, etc.).
